Ever since Macs entered the market, people have always praised Apple for keeping them virus free. The only major selling point over Windows based personal computers and so on were that it was literally impossible to get any kind of virus. We all knew that this would eventually change at some point in the future and it looks as if it just did. At the moment, over half a million Macs around the globe have been victim to a new flashback trojan.

Doctor Web (a Russian antivirus company) first reported about the trojan. If you’re worried that your Mac may have got the trojan then we’d recommend that you check out their site as soon as possible to learn more about it. According to them, 12.8% of the 500,000+ Macs that have been affected are in the United Kingdom so it’s well worth looking into if you’re a Mac owner.

This Mac virus was first discovered around six months ago but now it’s a lot worse than before. Back then it hid itself as an Adobe Flash Player installer but what is extremely worrying about the newest version of the virus is that you could get it without even downloading or clicking anything! Several websites used a Java exploit that allowed the Mac to become infected without giving any signs to the person that was using the Mac. At the moment it’s believed that there are around 5 million websites that are using this exploit, so be careful!

There are very few symptoms to see whether your Mac has got the trojan or not, so it’s not easy to check whether you’re unlucky enough to be one of the 500,000+ people that have got the trojan so far. However, it’s recommended that you download the latest software that Apple have recently released to combat this virus. If you don’t know how to do this it’s pretty simple, all you need to do is click on the Apple logo (top left) on your desktop and click on software update.

The virus will get all your usernames and passwords that your Mac has stored, so it’s important that you update your Mac right now. This is a reminder to everybody that uses machines, Mac or not, that you should always make sure that the software that you’re using is up to date to reduce the chances of getting anything like this. Even though there will always be the chance that you’ll get a virus or whatever, all you can do is try to reduce the chances of this happening to you!
