Over the last year or so we’ve heard bits and pieces about augmented reality glasses, but most people didn’t really believe that it could ever actually happen. Well, it looks like Google has already put a lot of time and effort into these futuristic glasses and who knows; maybe we’ll see them released to the public in the near future?

Google have released a number of images of the augmented glasses, one of which you can see on the left. As well as this, they’ve also released a video of these reality specs which gives you some sort of an idea of how these glasses can make your day to day life easier than before!

Although the video shows a person doing a number of things such as asking where the music section is in a local book shop, it’s still quite hard to believe that these will actually work as well as they do in the video – but we certainly hope that they will! As well as this, these augmented reality glasses allow you to text your friend without even taking out a phone, ask where your friend is at the moment (don’t get too scared about this one, you’ll have to accept it before they find out where you are!) and even check-in to places too.

So far, it’s early days in the development of these augmented reality glasses so it’s hard to tell whether they are going to be a success or not. We assume that there are a lot more things that these augmented reality glasses can do since the video clip is only 2 and a half minutes long, but from the video we’re pretty impressed with it so far. However, there are some obvious problems with them, especially the fact that the glasses look as if they are from Star Trek or something! But then again, the glasses that have been shown to the public are only prototypes so it’s not really fair for us to criticise them at the moment since they will more than likely be a lot different when (or if) they get released to the public. Then again, if they work really well, would you care about how weird you look? Maybe not! We believe that Google are getting feedback on them from the public at the moment, so we’re expecting them to improve even more anyway.

If everything goes to plan, Google want to bring these out before 2013 so we can only wait and see. So, no matter what your thoughts are on what we know about these augmented reality glasses so far, whether you love or hate them, share your opinion below.

Facebook is one of the most used websites in the entire world at the moment, with 850 million active monthly users so it might come as a surprise to you that they’ve recently just bought Instagram for a massive $1bn (or just over £600m to us!) although it wasn’t all in cash, most of it the $1bn was made up of shares in the stock exchange. It’s still hard to imagine that amount of money though isn’t it?

Over that last couple of days there has been a lot of people speculating about why Facebook would even bother spending essentially $1bn to buy a site that only (yes, only!) has 30 million users. 30 million users is a lot of people, but in comparison to 850 million active monthly users it doesn’t sound like much. As well as this, the price that Facebook paid for Instagram is a lot more than what Instagram was worth not too long ago. Around a year ago Instagram was valued at just $100m, so the value has dramatically increased over a relatively short period of time. So, now that you know some background information about the sale, let’s take a look why we think Facebook bought Instagram.

Growing Popularity

At first, you might find it hard to believe that an app that was made just for iPhone users could compete with the giant that Facebook is. However, we really do think that Instagram scared Facebook, a lot! Even though Instagram doesn’t have all of the functionalities that a traditional social networking site has, it’s clear that there was demand for being able to share pictures and so on with your friends without too much hassle. When you think about it, this is why most people use Facebook too, so they can share photos of themselves on holiday, partying with friends and even share some funny photos. So maybe it was a good choice for Facebook to take over Instagram after all!

Instagram Expanding

The co-founder of Instagram, Kevin Systrom recently made a comment saying that Instagram was going to change from just being able to share photos with people. Whether this is true or not, we’ll never know. But either way, it was a clever move to put Facebook under some pressure into making an offer (and a very good one). As well as this, it was clear that Instagram was going to expand even further after they released an app for Android users after news broke out that it got downloaded over 5 million times in less than a week. The next step for Instagram was probably to release a desktop site, but that probably won’t happen now since Facebook have bought it.

Mobile Popularity

There’s no doubt that Facebook is popular on all devices, whether you’re talking about personal computers or mobile phones. However, Facebook have never been lucky enough to experience massive viral growth from the mobile market, while Instagram was the complete opposite. Within a matter of months some of the most famous celebrities such as Rihanna started to use the app on a regular basis. Will Facebook learn from Instagram? Let’s wait and see!

So, what do you think about this £630m sale? Let us know in the comments below.

Edward Pearson from York, England was recently sentenced to just over 2 years in prison after he pleaded guilty for being responsible for stealing around 200,000 PayPal accounts as well as a few thousand bank card numbers. From all of this information, he had personal information such as their name and full address of around 8 million UK residents.

The young hacker (23) used malware so that he could slowly build up all these records about millions of people, which took him around a year to get. Nearly all of the information that he gathered was just names and so on, but there were also bank card numbers from over 2,000 people. It’s believed that he could’ve sold all of this data and made hundreds of thousands of pounds, or even millions of pounds but fortunately it didn’t go that far. If all of these details got into the wrong hands the situation could’ve been a lot worse. The police were first alerted about this case when Edward’s girlfriend, a 21 year old student, decided to use the credit cards that they had access to so that they could book hotel rooms in York – the same area that the couple are from. The Southwark Crown court hear that Edward made just £2,400 from all the stolen accounts and bank cards, which is why he only got 26 months in prison.

It’s amazing how much information that this hacker had his hands on, and it’s surprising that more people haven’t been affected by noticing strange charges on their credit cards, bank accounts etc. To give you some sort of an idea how much information that Edward had, if you were to print it all out it would take nearly 140,000 A4 pages to fit it all in!

This isn’t the only hacking operation that he carried out though. In the past he also hacked into several networks including AOL and Nokia which allowed him to access information about all of their employees, which at the time was 8,000+. Nokia were then forced to close their network for weeks which obviously caused a lot of trouble and also cost the company a lot of money too.

Hopefully this skilful hacker can put his talent to better things in the future when he is released from prison. Luckily for him he won’t be in prison for too long compared to what a lot of other hackers have been sentenced to. It’s quite clear that he wasn’t in it for the money though, since he only stole £2,400 or so, and most of it was used to pay for his internet, pizza deliveries etc! £2,400 might sound like a lot of money but considering that this data could’ve easily sold for £8m according to a prosecutor in the court, it’s likely that he was just doing this for a challenge.

We’re just a few weeks in to 2013 and thankfully if you’re a gamer you have lots to look forward to during the rest of the year. Here are just some of 2013’s most anticipated games that are bound to make any gamer excited!

Bioshock Infinite

Bioshock Infinite’s release has already had 3 delays but thankfully we’re pretty sure that it will be released at the start of 2013. It’s expected that Bioshock Infinite will be released on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC at the end of March, so there’s not long to wait! If you’ve ever played Bioshock in the past then you’ll know how great the game is. It’s one of the few games on the market at the moment that has an epic story line that just keeps on giving. Unfortunately it looks like multiplayer won’t be a feature of the game, but hopefully that means that the developers will focus more on the single player experience which has been brilliant in previous Bioshock games.

Grand Theft Auto V

This is easily the most anticipated game of 2013 in our opinion. Grand theft auto games have always been amazing and there’s no reason why the latest game won’t be just as amazing or even better than previous ones! Rockstar have promised that this game will be just as good as their previous GTA games, and we’ve no reason to doubt this. The game will be set in a massive open-world map in Los Angeles, full of plenty of weapons, vehicles and much, much more! GTA V will also be realised in March 2013 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Star Wars 1313

There have been rumours for years that LucasArts was finally going to develop a Star Wars game, but at E3 2012 this was finally confirmed. Star Wars 1313 will be set in the dark underworld of Coruscant and will be a third person shooter. There is some bad news though, we still don’t know when the game will be released during 2013 and don’t even know what consoles we’ll be able to see it on.

Lego City Undercover

You probably didn’t expect t see a Lego game on the list of most anticipated games of 2013, but everyone loves Lego, right? We certainly do! Think about this game as GTA, but instead of realistic graphics you’ll have pieces of Lego! In the game you roam the streets of Lego City solving crimes (instead of making them like you would in GTA!). The release date is still to be confirmed and the game will be released on the Wii U only.

The makers of one of the most popular apps that is on the market at the moment, Rovio, have just announced that Angry Birds has been downloaded over 1 billion times. As well as telling the world about reaching 1 billion total downloads, they’ve also claimed that “This is only the beginning of our story”. It’s amazing that only a few years ago nobody even heard of Angry Birds, and now it’s so well-known that there are Angry Birds speakers, Angry Birds plush toys etc.

We’re not going to go through what the game is about since we assume that everyone knows about it by now, but basically the objective of the game is to fly birds into pigs and kill them. For such a simple app, it’s so impressive and addictive! If you haven’t played it before and don’t have a phone that its compatible with (even though the game is on just about every mobile phone by now) then you can play it here.

There are a total of 5 Angry Bird games at the time of writing this, which are: Angry Birds Classic, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Space and finally Angry Birds Magic. We recommend that you check all of these games out if you have the time, since they are all enjoyable.

So, what’s next for Angry Birds? Well, who knows? But with the statement that we previously mentioned at the start of this article we can only assume that there are a lot of things to look forward to from Rovio and the Angry Birds brand, so let’s hope that they don’t let us down!

Ever since Macs entered the market, people have always praised Apple for keeping them virus free. The only major selling point over Windows based personal computers and so on were that it was literally impossible to get any kind of virus. We all knew that this would eventually change at some point in the future and it looks as if it just did. At the moment, over half a million Macs around the globe have been victim to a new flashback trojan.

Doctor Web (a Russian antivirus company) first reported about the trojan. If you’re worried that your Mac may have got the trojan then we’d recommend that you check out their site as soon as possible to learn more about it. According to them, 12.8% of the 500,000+ Macs that have been affected are in the United Kingdom so it’s well worth looking into if you’re a Mac owner.

This Mac virus was first discovered around six months ago but now it’s a lot worse than before. Back then it hid itself as an Adobe Flash Player installer but what is extremely worrying about the newest version of the virus is that you could get it without even downloading or clicking anything! Several websites used a Java exploit that allowed the Mac to become infected without giving any signs to the person that was using the Mac. At the moment it’s believed that there are around 5 million websites that are using this exploit, so be careful!

There are very few symptoms to see whether your Mac has got the trojan or not, so it’s not easy to check whether you’re unlucky enough to be one of the 500,000+ people that have got the trojan so far. However, it’s recommended that you download the latest software that Apple have recently released to combat this virus. If you don’t know how to do this it’s pretty simple, all you need to do is click on the Apple logo (top left) on your desktop and click on software update.

The virus will get all your usernames and passwords that your Mac has stored, so it’s important that you update your Mac right now. This is a reminder to everybody that uses machines, Mac or not, that you should always make sure that the software that you’re using is up to date to reduce the chances of getting anything like this. Even though there will always be the chance that you’ll get a virus or whatever, all you can do is try to reduce the chances of this happening to you!

Twitter is becoming more and more popular at the moment, but recently they’ve had a lot of problems in relation to spam. Unfortunately, nearly all sites get flooded with spam each and every day but when a site is as big as Twitter (around 150 million active users), you can expect a lot of spam to deal with there! If you’re on Twitter you’ve probably seen plenty of spammy tweets by now and since you’re so used to it you probably don’t even notice it anymore. However, Twitter aren’t going to leave these spammers to ruin one of the most popular social networking sites in the world.

Twitter has decided to bring the law into the equation. Now, you might be wondering how a site can stop people (or bots!) posting messages on the site and Twitter believes that it has a good idea. Their plan is to bring the people who have made these tools that were specifically designed in order to spam Twitter to court in San Francisco. The only problem with this is that there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of different tools available online to do tasks such as this but at the moment Twitter have chosen the 5 most well-known developers of these tools to bring to court. They believe that if they make these developers shut their tools down it’ll stop other people from using them and therefore reduce the amount of spam on Twitter.

It sounds great, doesn’t it? However, we feel as if Twitter could be wasting their time and money on this case for a number of reasons. Firstly, if some of the tools get shut down there will more than likely by loads of other tools that people can use instead, so it’s probably a waste of time. Secondly, we’re sure that there are other developers that are working on more advanced tools so that they can use Twitter for their spam, it’s never going to stop completely. However, the one good thing about this court case is that it should stop some people from developing tools such as this. After all, the people who make these tools are often very talented and they could make other tools that people might like even more.

Overall, this is great news for 99.9% of people that just want to use the internet and enjoy it. It’s not great news for people that take advantage of spamming techniques though! It’s clear to us that Twitter has a massive problem with spam, especially since around 2% of tweets in 2010 were spam according to The Wall Street Journal. So, hopefully we won’t see as many “Click on this link to get Justin Bieber’s new song for free” type of tweets in the future, fingers crossed!

Although Apple has one of the best reputations that a brand has in the whole world, it seems as if nearly every new product that they launch has some sort of issues. One of the most well-known of these is when the iPhone 4 first came to the market in 2010 and a lot of people couldn’t get coverage when they held their phone in a certain way. Not exactly what you want to have to deal with when you’re paying around £500+, is it? Well unfortunately it looks like something similar is happening with the iPad 3, and a free bumper case isn’t going to fix this one!

Many people who have recently bought the Apple iPad 3 have noticed that there is a problem with the Wi-Fi. If you have the iPad 3 and you noticed that it’s taking longer than usual to load pages or even if you’re finding it difficult to connect to wireless networks then you could be affected by this issue. The problem with this is that it might be hard to tell whether there’s something wrong with your iPad or not since you might just have slow internet speeds now and again while you’re using any device, whether it’s a laptop, phone or iPad.

At the moment there is no official news about this from Apple, but there has been an email that has been leaked from a customer service email. The good news about the email is that it seems as if Apple are taking this matter seriously, so don’t be worried that they are just going to tell everyone that there are no problems with the latest iPad. For many new owners of the iPad 3 it might be a bit scary to see that on the Apple support forums there has been nearly 1,000 replies (at the time of this post, we’re expecting it to continue to rise quickly!) about these Wi-Fi problems that iPad 3 owners are experiencing.

So, what do we recommend? Well, firstly we think that you should reset your iPad to factory settings (after backing it up of course!) and see does that get rid of the problem. This will get rid of any software bugs that might be there, but if you’re still not happy with the Wi-Fi on your iPad 3 contact Apple as soon as possible and see what they can do for you.
